Two US opinion polls, one conducted by Harris Polls of 2,201 American adults on line between January 21 and 27, 2003, and the other of 2002 adults conducted between June 24 and July 8, 2003 reveal the attitudes of people in the United States on many subjects.
In the richest and probably the best educated country in the world the results provide food for much thought.
The results of the first Harris Poll showed that of all US adults their beliefs are 90% in God 84% survival of the soul after death 84% miracles 82% heaven 80% the resurrection of Christ 77% The Virgin birth (Jesus born of Mary) 69% Hell 68% The Devil 51% ghosts 31% astrology 27% reincarnation
Some of the beliefs were incompatible or just surprising. Not all Christians believe in God, and the survival of the soul after death. Hardly anyone expects that they will go to Hell themselves. As many as 26% of those who are NOT Christian believe in the resurrection of Christ and 27% in the Virgin birth.
In the second poll 53% oppose allowing gays and lesbians to marry 50% would not vote for a well-qualified atheist for president 44% believe that God gave the land that is now Israel to the Jewish people 38% would not vote for a well-qualified Muslim for president 36% believe "the state of Israel is a fulfilment of biblical prophesy about the second coming of Jesus".
